Culture Eats Structure for Breakfast
 The #1 thing that successful school organizations have in common is that the adults work together as a team within a culture of respect. But how do we make that happen? Leadership is not a quick-fix; leadership is the art of cultivating a long-term reciprocal relationship built around teamwork and what’s best for kids. This session is presented by two principals- one elementary and one continuation high school- and will focus on how they each used the same concepts in different ways to redefine culture at their schools.  The session will focus on how to re-energize teachers to find their "why", and how to align that to who you purport yourselves to be as a school.

Ask staff members what makes them unhappy at work, and you will hear about low salary, apathetic students and parents, and possibly an unskilled supervisor.  Did you know that most people leave their bosses not their jobs? Managed badly, some factors make people miserable. But even if they are managed wonderfully, it doesn’t make anyone work much harder or smarter.  Staff members are motivated, instead, by interesting work, challenge and increased responsibility.  These intrinsic factors answer people’s deep- seated need for growth and achievement.  Participants will walk away from this session with very doable actions and resources that help to create meaning in their staff’s day-today work.

Impacting Instruction with Innovation
As school districts continue to move further into adopting state standards and NGSS is there an opportunity for providing teachers with more options that can impact student learning, shift pedagogy, increase engagement and adopt effective tools.  Orange Unifed School District has begun infusing computer science ideology into core curriculur classrooms through a three step process.  Participants in this presentation will be introduced how the district has introduced new tools through an evaluation process that turned into hands on experiences for teachers and classroom demonstrations for school sites.  This all culminates with teachers then being able to check out tools they can use that will influence purchasing decisions. Individuals will walk away with a system that can work for nearly any technology adoption for instruction.

Student Technology Interns and The Power of What If
Over the past four years, our student technology intern program has developed into an organic empowerment initiative. It began with one student’s bold email asking about a possibility and has led to a cultural transformation regarding professional development, department organization,  and tech support. Join us as we reflect on our journey to provide authentic experiences for our students as learners and hear how they became leaders, teachers, collaborators, and change-makers.

Today’s world is experiencing accelerated rates of change. This heightened rate and pace of change will have not only implications for the future of work, but for the focus of education. Inability of today’s educational leaders to connect these societal shifts to what it means to be truly 'career' ready will and have created skills gaps that limit our students choices and opportunities. In a time when the levels of outsourcing, automation, and enhanced achievements in artificial intelligence, as well as issues around poverty, under and unemployment, and connections between education and employment, are creating previously unforeseen shifts across all of society, we need forward thinking leaders, drenched in awareness, who can see the big opportunity arising from the chaos of a very non-obvious future. In the midst of this current and coming upheaval and disruption, we need educational leaders who can prepare our students, our educators and our organizations to survive and thrive in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world.

Hacking Social Emotional Learning
Creating a multifaceted social-emotional learning program that is both ongoing and engaging to students of all ages can be a daunting task for any school leader. Come discover the ideas/strategies one school site implemented to make SEL a priority. 

This will be a hands-on, interactive, and high-energy presentation. Participants will hear about and see examples of the various strategies, ideas, and events we implemented on our campus and in our classrooms that not only went beyond the traditional motivational speaker/assembly but made SEL as much a part of the curriculum as math or science. Participants will also get an opportunity to hear how we incorporated our upper-grade students in a variety of ways to be models for our primary students including teaching the social-emotional lessons to our K-3 classes themselves!
